Norton “Norty” Gordon, a respected history teacher and assistant wrestling coach at Cleveland Heights High School, died March 9. He was 66.
Mr. Gordon was also an executive for the Giant Tiger Corporation and worked in commercial real estate in the greater Cleveland area. After moving to Florida in the early 1970s, he worked in the produce business. Mr. Gordon returned to Cleveland for his retirement.
An avid reader, Mr. Gordon continued to study history, politics and law throughout his life. He was a sports fan and enjoyed classic country music and old-time crooners like Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett.
Born and raised in Cleveland, he worked at Gordon’s Superette, his parents’ business, during his teenage years. A member of Beta Alpha Tau fraternity, he was a graduate of Cleveland Heights High School, captain of the football team, and all-league wrestler in his weight class in both high school and college. A member of Zeta Beta Tau fraternity in college, he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Western Reserve University and his law degree from Case Western Reserve University School of Law.
Mr. Gordon is survived by daughter Lisa Prenga; son Sean; brother Harlan; sister Rosalie Rosenbaum; and three grandchildren.
